Some small stains but overall clean and binding is tight. The Wandering Jew is a figure from medieval Christian folklore whose legend began to spread in Europe in the thirteenth century. The original legend concerns a Jew who taunted Jesus on the way to the Crucifixion and was then cursed to walk the earth until the Second Coming. The exact nature of the wanderer's indiscretion varies in different versions of the tale, as do aspects of his character; sometimes he is said to be a shoemaker or other tradesman, sometimes he is the doorman at Pontius Pilate's estate. George Croly's Salathiel, which appeared anonymously in 1828, treated the subject of The Wandering Jew in an imaginative form, it was reprinted under this title

The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language, David Crystal
11 David Crystal The Cambridge Encyclopedia of the English Language
Cambridge University Press 1995-05-26 0521401798 / 9780521401791 Hardcover Used: Like New Very Good Hardcover
Unread. Same split in dust jacket on fold of top corner. Inside pages clean and binding is tight. 489 pages with colour and b/w illustrations. Systematically explores the history, structure, variety, and range of uses of the English language worldwide. English is arguably the nearest thing we have to a world language, and yet it is a language with a wealth of varieties, dialects, and traditions, all developing in different ways and at different speeds. This book is a superbly written and illustrated exploration of the history, structure, and use of English throughout the world. World-renowned linguist and author, David Crystal, explores the many facets and varieties of the English language, bringing life to this large and complex subject. He begins with the origins of English in Anglo-Saxon times and follows the growth of the language to the present. Every major English-speaking country is included, and the book abounds with insights into how English evolved and how it works. The author pays particular attention to the use of language in literature and how it permeates humor. He allows language to speak for itself by using quotations, photographs, newspaper clippings, poems, advertisements, cartoons, and many other types of illustrative material that vividly complement his narrative. Author Crystal systematically covers the structural features of English, and includes a complete description of grammar, a summary of pronunciation and writing systems, and a thorough treatment of the size and complexity of vocabulary. He explains technical aspects in simple and accessible terms and includes a glossary to assist the reader with unclear language terminology. Highly visual with striking color illustrations, panels and boxed features throughout, this book is fascinating reading for the widest possible audience.

C. S. Lewis: images of his world., Gilbert, Douglas R. Kilby, Clyde S.
20 Gilbert, Douglas R. Kilby, Clyde S. C. S. Lewis: images of his world.
W. B. Eerdmans Pub. Co. 1973-01-01 First Edition Unknown Binding Collectible: Good Unknown Binding
Cover is yellowed and has small stains. Edge wear. Inside pages clean and binding is tight. A treasured classic offers a beautiful window into the people and places that shaped the life of beloved author, scholar, and apologist C. S. Lewis. In photographs and text (much of it in Lewis's own words), Douglas Gilbert and Clyde S. Kilby introduce us to such memorable friends as J. R. R. Tolkien and transport us to such magical places as the deer park outside Lewis's rooms at Magdalen College, Oxford. We also meet Lewis as a talented and brilliant child in Belfast, captivated by the myths and legends of the North, already writing and illustrating imaginative stories and poems at a young age. While the book includes an essay tracing Lewis's struggle to find faith and a chronology of his life, it is not a biography per se but rather a personal introduction, a composite portrait of a fascinating individual and the world in which he lived. Attractively laid out in a fresh new format, this volume will be prized both by longtime fans of Lewis and by those encountering him for the first time.
