The Devil in the New World: The Impact of Diabolism in New Spain [Hardcover], Dr. Fernando Cervantes
6 Dr. Fernando Cervantes The Devil in the New World: The Impact of Diabolism in New Spain [Hardcover]
Yale University Press 1994-07-27 0300059752 / 9780300059755 Hardcover Collectible: Very Good Very Good Hardcover
Blue dot sticker on endpaper. Previous owner's embossed stamp on title page. Inside pages clean and binding is tight. Despite the extensive modern literature on the evangelization of the New World, the devil has received little attention. Yet until the end of the eighteenth century, missionaries themselves saw diabolism as the root of the Amerindian belief system and as the principal reason for their own failure to establish a church purged of Satan and pagan superstition. This book explores the nature of diabolism and describes how it occupied a central place in assessments of all non-Christian religious systems, as well as in the bitter fight to subdue them. In illuminating a neglected aspect of the European encounter with America, Cervantes sets the full history of the 'spiritual conquest' in a rich and original context. He shows how native Americans themselves received and re-interpreted the view of Christianity presented to them; how they refused to see the world as the missionaries saw it.

Amsterodami: Apud Ioann, Ianssonium 1647-01-01 Vellum Collectible: Very Good Leather Bound
1647. 5" X 3".Text in Latin. Vellum leather binding, hinges, covers are in overall slightly worn and scuffed.Leather laces to close the book may have been replaced at a latter date. Top edge worn to board. Vellum bent around board edges toward pages. Engravings on cover are worn. Writing on spine for title is faded. Notes on endpapers. A few small stains but overall pages are clean. The author: Florus, Roman historian, lived in the time of Trajan and Hadrian. He compiled, chiefly from Livy, a brief sketch of the history of Rome fron the foundation of the city to the closing of the temple of Janus by Augustus (25BC). The work, which is called Epitome de T. Livio Bellorum omnium annorun DCC Libri duo, is written in a bombastic and rhetorical style--- a panegyric of the greatness of Rome, the life of which is divided into the periods of infancy, youth and manhood. It is often wrong in geographical and chronological details. In spite of its faults, however, the book was much used as a handy epitome of Roman history, in the Middle Ages and survived as a textbook into the nineteenth century. In the manuscripts the writer is variously named as Julius Florus, Lucius Anneus Florus, or simply Annaieu Florus. From certain similarities of style, he has been identified as Publuius Annius Florus, poet, rhetorician and friend of Hadrian, author of a dialogue on the question of whether Virgil was an orator or poet, of which the introduction has been preserved. Illustrated with an engrave title page.

Roman Art. First Edition, Heintze, Helga von.
20 Heintze, Helga von. Roman Art. First Edition
New York (Universe Books) 1971-01-01 First Edition Hardcover Collectible: Very Good Good Hardcover
First edition. Dust jacket is rubbed, chipped, torn and missing pieces. Book in red cloth is near fine. Slight yellowing on pages. Inside pages clean and binding is tight. Roman art emerged from an intermingling of Italo-Etruscan and Greek-Hellenistic forms. It was the conservative art of warriors, in which the subject was far more important than the form. It is not surprising therefore that the different phases of Roman art are named after political epochs, individual rulers and dynasties. The buildings themselves were not based on the Greek laws of proportion; they no longer respected the landscape but dominated it, and Roman architecture would be the source for much that was done in later centuries. In this comprehensive survey, covering the period 5000 BC-AD 305, the author examines the influences, innovations, aims and achievements of Roman artists in all media, and draws on a wide range of examples, from Rome itself as well as the empire - Pompeii, the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the aqueduct in Tarragona, Hadrian's villa at Tivoli and Trajan's column.
