Ten Texas Feuds (Historians of the Frontier and American West), C. L. Sonnichsen; Foreword-Dale L. Walker
7 C. L. Sonnichsen; Foreword-Dale L. Walker Ten Texas Feuds (Historians of the Frontier and American West)
University of New Mexico Press 2000-06-01 0826322999 / 9780826322999 Paperback Used: Like New Paperback
Tales of Texas. Unread. For twenty years, grassroots historian C. L. Sonnichsen went door to door through the backcountry of east and south-central Texas to coax tales from reluctant informants and peruse county documents on the colorful feuds that bloodied the state's early history. From these human explosions emerged legendary gangs such as the Regulators, Moderators, Hoodoos, Heel Flies, and Boots. Personal vengeance righted intolerable wrongs and settled unbearable grievances. Sonnichsen notes,The men who fought these battles were mostly pretty good people, but they harshly stamped their otherwise normal lives with bloody vengeance. Dale L. Walker, Sonnichsen's biographer, sketches the author's life, historical craft, and publishing and teaching career. Based on painstaking research and interviews, Sonnichsen's tales bring to life the bloody feuds of the young state of Texas, where personal vengeance righted intolerable wrongs and settled unbearable grievances.

Late in life, Clayton Elliot faces long-deferred hard choices. Circumstances force him to bury his recently deceased wife, Adelita, in the little West Texas border town of Solitario instead of next to their three-year-old daughter on their hardpan ranch. To pay for Adelita's cancer treatments, Clayton sold this marginal ranchland to water developers. By reuniting Serafina with her mother in Solitario, Clayton hopes to assuage his guilt about her death twenty-five years earlier. However, whether Clayton moves Serafina immediately or ignores the contracted deadline, either act will trigger drilling into the aquifer for water. His lifelong friends are vehemently opposed to drilling. When a young Mexican woman mysteriously enters his life, Clayton must delay his efforts to move Serafina and surreptitiously help this woman who has illegally crossed into Texas. This decision also raises the ire of Clayton's friends. Throughout the novel, Clayton struggles with both the internal and external borders of his life. And the eccentric characters of Solitario find they, too, must confront their own geographical, psychological, and racial boundaries.
