Leather cover is brittle and chipped, rubbed and worn to the boards. Leather is missing on spine. Corners bumped, Endpapers have chips. Inside pages have some light foxing, water stains and fingerprints and tanning. Binding has gaps but overall is tight.Translated from the Italian of Gregorio Leti, with a Preface, Prolegomena, Notes, and Appendix, by Ellis Farneworth, M.A., some time of Jesus College in Cambridge, and Chaplain to several of his Majesty's ships, during the late war.Born Felice Peretti di Montalto in 1521. At a young age he joined the Franciscan order, where he displayed talents as a scholar and preacher, and enjoyed the patronage of Pius V, who made him a Cardinal. 1612 Vellum. Vellum is stain chipped with a thumb piece missing from the top side opening edge. Stains on cover. Leather laces have been replaced with more modern leather. End leaves have been replaced with previous owner's name and notes on endpaper. Light foxing on title page. Water stain on right page edges. Title page has been bonded to another blank page with an engraving of Apollo glued to the back of it. Light stains in pages but overall clean and binding is tight. 11.25" X 7.50" X 2" Large woodcut of Tower of Babylon on title page. Mornay dedicated the original version of this treatise on the evils of the Papacy to King James I and urged him to mount a vigorous campaign against Rome. This first English translation is dedicated not to James but to his elder son Prince Henry, who was believed to be more sympathetic to a militant foreign policy.
