4 Ades, Dawn; McClean, Alison Revolution on Paper: Mexican Prints 1910-1960 (Joe R. and Teresa Lozano Long Series in Latin American and Latino Art and Culture)
University of Texas Press 2009-11-15 0292722486 / 9780292722484 First Edition Paperback Collectible: Like New Paperback
Unread. The left-wing government viewed art as an important vehicle for education and the promotion of revolutionary values. It established a program to cover the walls of public buildings with murals and set up numerous workshops to produce prints for wide distribution. By the 1930s, Mexico was attracting socially committed artists from all over the American continent and beyond, ready to do battle for a new aesthetic as well as a new political order. Diego Rivera, a key figure in the art of revolution, became one of the most celebrated artists in the world.Starting with works by Jose Guadalupe Posada, who was adopted by the revolutionaries as the archetypal printmaker for the people, Revolution on Paper features prints by thirty-five artists, including the Three Greats of Mexican art of the period--Rivera, Jose Clemente Orozco, and David Alfaro Siqueiros. The selection includes not only single-sheet artists prints, but also posters addressing social and political issues, and illustrated books on many different subjects. Images of the revolutionary hero Emiliano Zapata, scenes of poverty, hunger, and oppression, and posters protesting against fascism and the war in Europe contrast with representations of Mexican history and idealized rural life that express what was regarded as typically Mexican. Introductory essays by Dawn Ades and Alison McClean set Mexican printmaking in its artistic and political context. Book has chronologky from 1852 to 1960. Also list of Mexican Presidents from 1876 to 1964. Most prints are in color.

The living treasures of Bahrain, Al Khalifa, Danah
5 Al Khalifa, Danah The living treasures of Bahrain
Oriental Press 1971-01-01 Paperback Collectible: Very Good Paperback
Light rubbing and edge wear. Inside pages clean and binding is tight.Rare homage to Bahrain's royal tradition of Arabian horse breeding, published by The Royal Arabian Studs of Bahrain (identified by their crest to the back). "It is believed today that the largest collection of Arabian horses in the world is to be found in the possession of HH Shaikh Isa Bin Sulman Al Khalifa, the Ruler of Bahrain Islands. HH's horses are not bred for commercial purpose but for pleasure and pride in upholding a family tradition. With the advent of the Al Khalifas to Bahrain, almost two centuries ago, some of the finest horses of desert Arabia were brought with them. These horses have been preserved in their original ancient form and bloodlines. The Royal stud consists of approximately 500 Arabians. Pictures in this booklet have been chosen at random to show some of the horses in their different aspects of their life in Bahrain." Very rare - copies traced to just 4 institutions, of which 2 on Copac (British Library, Exeter, Middle Tennessee State University, Cal Poly Pomona). Printed at Oriental Press, Bahrain. Original color illustrated staple-bound wraps. Landscape format 24 x 15cm. Unpaginated, 120pp consisting of introductory text in Arabic (1pp) and English (1pp) followed by 59 pages of photographs (most full-page) printed to the rectos only, with English / Arabic captions facing, interspersed with occasional poetry. The photos are primarily in b/w, with some color. The introductory text includes a list of horse "strains" or families. REFERENCE: This book is referred in an article in the Arabian Magazine Online, by Joe Ferriss in 2012: "In 1975 while attending a large Arabian horse extravaganza, called the Arabian Horse Fair in Louisville Kentucky, I picked up a book at one of the book-vendor booths, titled the Living Treasures of Bahrain by Danah Al Khalifa. I was awestruck by the natural beauty of these ?deserty? looking steeds, photographed on pearl-like sand. The first stallion presented in the book was a horse called ?Old Speckled Jellaby?. He was 34 years old in the photograph and was a remarkably handsome old horse. There was somehow a natural charm revealed in these Bahraini horses, bearing the qualities of wild animals with a free and unencumbered spirit ? and unaltered by the western world. The black and white photos were so inviting as to make the reader feel as if they were going back in time to the desert to see real original Arabian horses in a native setting. I never forgot the impression that book made on me."

Running more than 1,200 miles from headwaters in eastern New Mexico through the middle of Texas to the Gulf of Mexico, the Brazos River has frustrated developers for nearly two centuries. This environmental history of the Brazos traces the techniques that engineers and politicians have repeatedly used to try to manage its flow. The vast majority of projects proposed or constructed in this watershed were failures, undone by the geology of the river as much as the cost of improvement.

The New Country: A Social History of the American Frontier, 1776-1890, BARTLETT, Richard A.
16 BARTLETT, Richard A. The New Country: A Social History of the American Frontier, 1776-1890
Oxford Univ. 1974-01-01 First Edition Hardcover Collectible: Very Good Good Hardcover
First edition. Dust jacket is rubbed, chipped and missing a piece near the top of the spine. Small stains on outside page edges and endpaper. Corners bumped. Inside pages clean and binding is tight. From borax mule trains to the canoe stop that was Chicago in the 1830s, this book vividly recreated the tale of the westward movement of pioneers into the heartland of North America. With nearly a century separating historian Richard Bartlett from the end of the movement, Bartlett's broad perspective stresses the continuity and inevitability of this greatest element of America's Golden Age. The book focuses on the settlement of the country, the racial and ethnic composition of the people, agriculture, transportation, developments of the land, the growth of towns and cities, and the nature of frontier society as it brilliantly brings to life the frontier experience as lived by millions of Americans. Bartlett concludes that the pioneer's freedom from restrictions in a new country resulted in the unprecedented burst of energy that settled America in some 114 years. Black and white illustrations and photographs.

Putnam Adult 2013-09-10 0399159215 / 9780399159213 First Edition Hardcover Collectible: Like New Like New Hardcover Signed by Author
Signed by author on title page without inscription. First Edition with full number line. One hundred years after his inauguration, Woodrow Wilson still stands as one of the most influential figures of the twentieth century, and one of the most enigmatic. And now, after more than a decade of research and writing, Pulitzer Prize-winning author A. Scott Berg has completed Wilson the most personal and penetrating biography ever written about the 28th President. In addition to the hundreds of thousands of documents in the Wilson Archives, Berg was the first biographer to gain access to two recently-discovered caches of papers belonging to those close to Wilson. From this material, Berg was able to add countless details, even several unknown events that fill in missing pieces of Wilson's character and cast new light on his entire life. From the scholar-President who ushered the country through its first great world war to the man of intense passion and turbulence , from the idealist determined to make the world "safe for democracy"to the stroke-crippled leader whose incapacity and the subterfuges around it were among the century's greatest secrets, the result is an intimate portrait written with a particularly contemporary point of view, a book at once magisterial and deeply emotional about the whole of Wilson's life, accomplishments, and failings. This is not just Wilson the icon but Wilson the man.
