Description: 8vo - over 7�" - 9�" tall Philip L Barbour, Houghton Mifflin Co., 1964, stated First Printing, Brown Cloth Hardcover with Dustjacket, 553 pages, 8 3/4" tall, John Smith was born in obscurity in Lincolnshire in 1580, was a colonist, adventurer and promoter - became a soldier of fortune on the continent. He then became actively interested in England"s new ventures across the Atlantic. In 1606 he sailed with the first Jamestown settlers, and kept the settlement together through Indian raids, and famine. He became one of the prime movers in the founding of the New England colonies. Captured by pirates and was shipwrecked off the New England coast, in 1616 he published a map of the coast. Smith was also famous for capturing the affections of Pocahontas and was saved from being clubbed to death. He also published the first practical
