Brown Leather. Written in Latin. Transverse folio (19" by 15 1/4"). With 83 leaves of etched plates. Rebound with 19th century leather. Rubbing, light wear to corners and spine. There is a water stain on the bottom of the pages but does not affect the engraving. Large gift inscription on endpaper. Some light foxing on edges and few print stains. Overall clean and binding is tight. The work first appeared around 1685 as part of a series of copper engravings about the Roman antiquities that the painter, copper engraver and publisher Bartoli and the art writer and collector Bellori attempted to preserve and document the "non-literary, pictorial sources of antiquity." Giovanni Giacomo Rossi and his successor from 1693, Domenico Rossi, then issued a new, changed edition of the work. Bartoli's etchings were aimed at detail, accurate accuracy and formal, aesthetic reproduction. The place of storage and, in some cases, the bearer of the relief are mentioned, although without indication of size and material. The reliefs are treated primarily as iconographic evidence of the history and culture of Rome.
