Kahlo (Basic Art), Kettenmann, Andrea
62 Kettenmann, Andrea Kahlo (Basic Art)
Taschen 1994-06-01 3822896365 / 9783822896365 Paperback Collectible: Very Good Paperback
Unread with pages lightly yellowed. Inside pages clean. The Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) is one of the most important 20th century painters, and one of the few Latin American artists to have achieved a global reputation. In 1983 her work was declared the property of the Mexican state. Kahlo was one of the daughters of an immigrant German photographer and a Mexican woman of Indian origin. Her life and work were more inextricably interwoven than in almost any other artist's case. Two events in her life were of crucial importance. When she was 18, a bus accident put her in hospital for a year with a smashed spinal column and fractured pelvis. It was from her sick bed that she first started to paint. Then, aged 21, she married the world-famous Mexican mural artist Diego Rivera. She was to suffer the effects of the accident her whole life long, and was particularly pained by her inability to have children. Her arresting pictures, most of them small format self-portraits, express the burdens that weighed upon her soul: her unbearable physical pain, the grief that Rivera's occasional affairs prompted, the sorrow about her childlessness caused her, her homesickness when living abroad and her longing to feel that she had put down roots, profound loneliness. However, they also declare her passionate love for her husband, her pronounced sensuousness, and her unwavering survival instinct.

Beauty Is Convulsive: The Passion of Frida Kahlo, Maso, Carole
74 Maso, Carole Beauty Is Convulsive: The Passion of Frida Kahlo
Counterpoint 2002-11-01 1582430896 / 9781582430898 First Edition Hardcover New Like New Hardcover
A vibrant series of prose poems celebrating the life of artist Frida Kahlo. Beauty Is Convulsive is a biographical meditation on one of the twentieth centurys most compelling and famous artists, Frida Kahlo (1907-1954). At the age of nineteen, Kahlos life was transformed when the bus in which she was riding was hit by a trolley car. Pierced by a steel handrail and broken in many places, she entered a long period of convalescence during which she began to paint self-portraits. In 1928, at twenty-one, she joined the Communist Party and came to know Diego Rivera. The forty-one-year-old Rivera, Mexicos most famous painter, was impressed by the force of Kahlos personality and by the authenticity of her art, and the two soon married. Though they were devoted to each other, intermittent affairs on both sides, Fridas grief over her inability to bear a child, and her frequent illnesses made the marriage tumultuous. This prose poem is typical Maso --vigorous, daring, always original. She brings together parts of Kahlos biography, her letters, medical documents, and her diaries with language that is often as erotic and colorful as Kahlos paintings.

Frida, Mujica, Barbara

Overlook Hardcover 2001-01-29 158567074X / 9781585670741 First Edition Hardcover Collectible: Like New Like New Hardcover
First edition with full number line. Frida Kahlo, world famous artist and cultural icon, lived a life full of extremes. Crippled by polio and left barren by a near fatal accident at age eighteen, she went on to marry another towering cultural figure, muralist Diego Rivera. Filled with passion, love, jealousy, and deceit, their story captured the world's imagination. Told in the voice of Frida's sister Cristina, who is witness to Frida and Diego's tumultuous marriage, this is a brilliantly conceived work of historical fiction and a vivid portrait of a compelling, unique woman. What unfolds is both an intense tale of sibling rivalry, as both an intense tale of sibling rivalry, as both sisters vie for Rivera's affection, and a fascinating history of Mexico in the first half of the twentieth century, replete with figures like Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky and the stunningly beautiful movie star Maria Felix. Mujica imbues the lives and loves of these remarkable historical figures with real drama and builds her tale to shattering conclusion.
